The Camp

History

Camp St. George was established in 2001 with the blessing of Metropolitan PHILIP, Primate of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America. As an outgrowth of the highly successful Antiochian Village Summer Camp, Camp St. George was established to give Midwest Orthodox youth of all jurisdictions the opportunity to experience the many blessings of summer camp.

Having the "mountain top experience" of camp and being part of a strong Orthodox community of peers at the end of the summer is an excellent way for youth to begin the new school year!

Location

Camp Wapsie is the place Camp St. George calls "home." Camp Wapsie is a YMCA American Camping Association accredited camp located just north of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This beautiful camp is located on an oxbow lake off the Wapsipinicon River on 172 acres of woods and wetlands. The Camp Wapsie facility and staff are among the best to be found - and it even boasts one of the newest state-of-the-art zip line/climbing towers in the nation!

Staff

Our Camp Director is Fr. Patrick Kinder, pastor of St. Ignatius Antiochian Orthodox Church in Madison, Wisconsin. Fr. Patrick was a counselor at the Antiochian Village in the 1980's and was a member of the Orthodox music group, KERYGMA, whose music was -and still is- a great inspiration to many Orthodox young people! Fr. Patrick is assisted by an excellent staff of faithful Orthodox Christians with many years of combined experience from Camp St. George, the Antiochian Village and other youth camps.

Every year we have opportunities for faithful Orthodox Christian adults (young or simply young at heart!) to serve as counselors and program directors. We also have Counselor-in-Training (CIT) positions available for 17-18 year old campers. Please send in your application or contact Fr. Patrick for more information!
